Brief History

Minor Basilica of Our Lady of the Assumption, nestled in the heart of Santa Maria, Ilocos Sur, is a beacon of faith and a masterpiece of Filipino-Baroque heritage. More commonly known as Santa Maria Church, this sacred edifice holds a unique place in the annals of Philippine history and architecture.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993, the basilica proudly stands among the esteemed “Baroque Churches of the Philippines.” Its distinctive Earthquake Baroque style is a profound reflection of the Filipino spirit—adapting European grandeur to local conditions. Its fortress-like structure, with thick walls and robust buttresses, was designed to safeguard the house of God against the very ground it stands on.

What truly sets the church apart is its extraordinary location. Unlike most colonial-era churches, Santa Maria Church stands atop a verdant hill, reached by a historic 85-step granite stairway. This strategic elevation not only offers panoramic views but also once served as a vital watchtower against potential threats—embodying both spiritual and physical defense.

From its humble beginnings as a visita in the 17th century to its elevation as a Minor Basilica in 2024, the church has been a spiritual sanctuary, a community cornerstone, and a source of enduring inspiration. Generations have gathered here to celebrate the sacraments, find solace, and deepen their devotion to Our Lady of the Assumption.

Adding to its profound significance, on November 4, 2024, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines officially included the Minor Basilica of Our Lady of the Assumption as one of the designated pilgrim churches for the Jubilee 2025 celebration. This special recognition invites the faithful from across the nation and beyond to undertake a spiritual journey to this historic site, seeking graces and deepening their communion with God during this sacred year.

You are invited to step through our ancient doors, climb the storied steps, and immerse yourself in the rich history, artistry, and unwavering faith that permeate every stone of this magnificent basilica. Experience the enduring legacy of a community united by prayer and protected by grace.
